Kentucky Mule Cocktail
Bourbon cocktails are wildly popular right now and while you may have enjoyed a Moscow Mule (vodka with ginger beer) the American cousin has the same refreshing quality with a spicy kick thanks to the grated ginger and the smooth caramel and vanilla flavors you get from a good bourbon.
Why it works
This drink gives you refreshing flavor on a warm day
while the savory bourbon taste can give you the toasty warmth of a
night cap when enjoyed next to the evening fire.
Who’s going to love it
Those over 21 who enjoy a cocktail every now and then. Bourbon
drinkers and non-bourbon drinkers. Because it’s mixed with ginger beer, if you are not someone who enjoys the bourbon flavor you may love the crisp taste of this
mixed drink.
Things to consider
Enjoy responsibly sometimes these can sneak up on you.
Have a guest who does not drink alcohol? Use nonalcoholic ginger beer and add the ice, ginger, mint and limes. It’s just as yummy.

Let’s get started!
For 2 drinks You will need
- 2 limes
- Fresh mint
- Ginger
- Your bourbon of choice – 2 ounces for each cocktail
- Ginger beer (nonalcoholic or regular depending on what is available.)
- Ice
This cocktail is (technically) supposed to be made with nonalcoholic ginger beer. I’ve had trouble finding NA ginger beer and I have used regular alcohol ginger beer in a pinch. Keep in mind, the alcohol content will be higher so go slow.
Tools of the trade
- Glassware – yes, I know mules belong in the fancy copper mugs. They stay icy cold and they are cool! But, we’re camping so we use plastic mason jar cups.
- Knife or multi-tool to cut limes and ginger.
- Grater or fork to grate ginger.
- Something to juice the limes.
Putting it all together
- Cut one lime in half, or quarters. Whatever works best for juicing.
- Cut the other lime in wedges for garnish.
- Measure 2 ounces of bourbon for each drink.
- Cut and peel about a 1 inch piece of ginger (larger if you like more kick).
- Grate the ginger and divide the pile in half. One half for each drink.
- Muddle several pieces of fresh mint with the grated ginger and place in the bottom of the drink cup.
- Add ice, bourbon, beer and mix. Add lime wedges and mint as a garnish.
- Relax and enjoy!
