International Yoga Day 2018
Happy International Yoga Day 2018! I get a lot of questions, and I hear many ideas about yoga that aren’t exactly accurate. Yoga has a long and rich history in India and in the United States it has a complicated and at times, a misguided history. I think this is why there are so many questions and what makes yoga feel so, unapproachable at times.
Let’s take a fun look at some questions and comments I’ve received and we’ll find some answers together.
Question #1
Is yoga a meditation or exercise?
Yes! It's both.
In yoga you hold postures for minutes at a time. These postures are often difficult and strenuous.
Finding a way to go inside and maintain your composure and clam mind is what a good yoga practice is all about.
Another way to think about it is, it’s like taking a daily shower. Do you ever have your best ideas in the shower?
You were moving and doing, but your thoughts were inward. It’s kinda’ like that. It becomes a moving meditation. Eventually...
Question #2
What yoga do you recommend for a beginner?
This is a difficult question.
Yoga is not really known for having a beginner’s level.
Yoga is more of a, you’ll do what you can, and you will improve over time.
However, I now see and hear yoga studios offering beginners classes. If you can find one, give it a try. Go, do! #BeBrave
If you can’t find a beginner’s class in your area, you're going to have to be brave and head into a basic yoga class.
I practice with first timers every day. Everyone starts somewhere. I had to walk into my first Bikram class alone 16 years ago.
You will be very, very challenged. Don’t let this detour you.
When you get winded and exhausted, sit down, drink some water and relax. Try to control your breathing.
Breath slowly and mindfully through your nose only. Heavy breathing through your mouth will stress out your system more.

Take it one pose at a time. You will improve faster than you think.
Comments I hear:
I’m not flexible so, I can't do yoga.
What?!
Look, you would never say to your personal trainer, “I’m not strong so I’m not going to lift weights.”
You have got to do the yoga to build your flexibility.
A lack in flexibility in joints is what leads to serious injuries in sports and as we age.
We’ve got to have flexibility in all areas of our lives. From our bodies to our minds to our relationships.
